Duke Energy,is one of the largest electric power companies in the United States,  and delivers electricity to nearly 4 million US customers .Duke has acquired  Vermont based acquired Catamount Energy Corporation , which has developed wind projects in US and United Kingdom. This acquisition has cost Duke $240 million and any assumed debt.

Duke is slowly but surely building up its renewable energy generating capacity. This acquisition comes after the recent agreement to purchase electrical power from a photovoltaic solar farm slated to be built in Davidson County.Duke has also plans to invest $100 million in to develop solar power in North Carolina. Now the plunge into the wind power segment further highlights that Duke’s plans to develop its renewable power offerings.

"Decarbonized" nations have strong economies.Sweden, for instance had announced a carbon tax in the year 1991 .This lead to a rush of entrepreneurs in the cleantech sector; generating power from wind, sun, and tidal energy.Even garbage, agricultural wastes were used for energy generation. As a result Sweden’s growth rates surged in the corresponding period.Spurred by this success, Sweden is now aiming at complete elimination of fossil fuel based power by year 2020.Iceland ,another nation was dependent on imported coal and oil for nearly 70% of its energy needs during 1970′s.Today Iceland has successfully tapped geothermal energy and hydroelectric power for its energy needs.90% of all housing in the country is heated with geothermal energy; the remainder being heated mainly with electricity. The majority of the country’s electricity (80%) is generated using hydropower; the remainder being based on geothermal power. The immediate fallout of this energy independence is a fourth ranking of Iceland, in the most affluent nations of the earth by the International Monetary Fund.

And finally ,California notorious for its commitment towards environment protection is one of US’s most energy efficient states and also possesses a robust economy .Studies have also revealed that US has greater domestic energy resources compared to Iceland or Sweden and an estimated second-largest geothermal energy resource in the world.Give these facts perhaps the republicans can have a rethink of their continued support to oil companies.

  • StatoilHydro to Build First Offshore Floating Wind Turbine

StatoilHydro has announced its plans to build and test a fully scale floating wind turbine -  Hywind,. StatoilHydro is planing a power capacity of 2.3 MW on a float that is generally employed by  docking platforms. The estimated costs in this ambitious project are expected to be in the region of $80 million and construction is scheduled to to start by fall 2009.Offshore wind turbines are preferred for power generation primarily due to the availability of regular high speed wind power as opposed to onshore regions. However such installations tend to be prohibitively expensive owing to the high cost of supporting structure. The result of StatoilHydro- Hywind project may pave way for ease in deployment of offshore wind turbines with and also cut down on construction time.

Spiraling crude prices and global warming concerns forced exploration in "green energy" generation technologies.Wind power is one of the alternate energy generation process being currently investigated.Giant wind turbines are emerging in   USA .In addition small wind generators are also increasingly being utilized in rural and urban areas. According to he American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), a Washington-based trade organization the installed capacity of small wind residential generators has nearly tripled for 1300KW in 2006 to the current capacity of 3000KW.In addition there has been a tripling of number of residential installations; from 400 in 2006 to nearly 1200 units in 2008.Echoing the sentiment Mark Durrenberger, president and founder of New England Breeze says that he is being flooded with enquiries and requests for wind power equipment installation.
