The first is the accelerated application of alternative fuels and propulsion systems to reduce global dependency on fossil fuels. The second is growth in the emerging markets, including the ASEAN region, as a key factor in our continued global leadership  “

GM further says “  The new facility will be a state-of-the-art, highly flexible and people-focused production complex that incorporates GM’s leading manufacturing strategies. Nissan ,General Motors, Mitsubishi, are just some of the major automakers trying to get the electric vehicle equation right. Now an Indian based company, Reva Electric Car Company ( RECC ) , has come out with an electric vehicle design that has gained global acceptance. The model, Reva has a fuel economy of 1 cent /kilometer and is capable of traveling  80 km on a single charge , with a top speed of 80kmph. Although only 2,500 models have been sold since 2001, Reva is arguably the world’s largest selling EV.In another demonstration of the feasibility of Reva’s technology, RECC has received $20 million from the Global Environment Fund that invests in business capable of providing cost effective solutions to energy and environmental challenges.Emboldened by this fund grant RECC is now targeting at 30000 cars annually and anticipates bulk of demand from Europe.RECC is also available in 13 countries worldwide and has sold in excess of 1000 units in Britain alone, under the brand G-Wiz.In India too the Delhi government has provided a 29.5% subsidy to promote sale of Reva.

Indian technology is coming of age with the launch of globally competitive products such as the Reva.Recently Tata Motors created quite a ripple in the auto industry with the launch of the Nano, a mere $2500/car ,making it the cheapest car in the world. These events also signal that , considering Indian industry from the mere perspective of cost cutting by means of outsourcing would not augur well for sustainable competitive growth.

US Department Of Energy has announced $30 million in funding for development of electric vehicles. This amount would be split in three ways by GM ,Ford, and General Electric(GE).Under his agreement for research GM plans to focus on lithium -ion batteries and battery recharging technology for Electric Cars.Ford will focus on identifying bottlenecks in commercialization of plug in hybrid electric vehicles and GE would work towards dual battery energy storage system and its integration with the EV.Of the three Ford, seems to be making some headway in Plug-in hybrid vehicles with its recent Escape model.

DOE also plans to a second round of research applications under its PHEV Technology Acceleration and Deployment Activity plan, in July 2008. Considering Toyotas recent decision to build up its battery capacity, this latest effort by the DOE signifies that US is still struggling to get the right  electric vehicle plan. Additionally since conclusive  results are  expected by 2014-2016,makes on wonder is this effort is worthwhile.

Ethanol production in US is to a large extent done by processing corn fuel. However the process of corn cultivation requires significant input of land and energy ,in addition to raising the ethical question of trading food for fuel.In addition the green efficiency of ethanol produced from this method is low and this process may actually pollute the environment.Alternatives sources such as grass, wood require few resources for ethanol production but in turn need expensive processing technology.Coskata, a startup based in Warrenville is pioneering a radical method which it believes will reduce the processing cost associated with any organic material. This startup’s technology has caught attention of giants such as General Motors which is partnering with Coskata to help commercialization of the technology on a big scale.
