Wind energy seems to be the new favorite of all renewable energy technologies. Billionaire T Boon Pickens has invested a couple of billions ($12 Billion) in his wind farm and also initiated the  Clean Energy Fuels (CLNE) .Pickens believes the dependence on foreign oil can be weaned through a rigorous adoption of a multitude of energy technologies, and rightfully so. He further adds that Bush is too ethanol focused and believes natural gas as one of US energy assets. Now GE has declared that its renewable energy investments have exceeded $4billion with $100 million invested in upcoming wind projects.

GE’s present investments include a total of 76 wind farms and a generating capacity in excess of 4000 MW. This seems to be beneficial to GE from a business perspective as investments in wind projects provide a steady demand for their in house turbines.

US Department Of Energy has announced $30 million in funding for development of electric vehicles. This amount would be split in three ways by GM ,Ford, and General Electric(GE).Under his agreement for research GM plans to focus on lithium -ion batteries and battery recharging technology for Electric Cars.Ford will focus on identifying bottlenecks in commercialization of plug in hybrid electric vehicles and GE would work towards dual battery energy storage system and its integration with the EV.Of the three Ford, seems to be making some headway in Plug-in hybrid vehicles with its recent Escape model.

DOE also plans to a second round of research applications under its PHEV Technology Acceleration and Deployment Activity plan, in July 2008. Considering Toyotas recent decision to build up its battery capacity, this latest effort by the DOE signifies that US is still struggling to get the right  electric vehicle plan. Additionally since conclusive  results are  expected by 2014-2016,makes on wonder is this effort is worthwhile.

Good post at the Cleantech Blog regarding GE’s growing dominance in everything green energy..

In the past few years they have purchased Enron Wind making them one of the top 5 wind players overnight, purchased a leading gas engine manufacturer making them an overnight leader in small clean power systems, acquired one of the top 5 solar companies in 2004 (Astropower), in 2005 acquired one of the largest water technology businesses (Ionics) assuring a leadership position in water purification which will be huge in the coming years.  I agree with the author that a spinoff of one of these would create a big time IPO.
