French car maker Renault is skeptical of a hybrid vehicle’s environmental friendly performance.Renault says hybrids cannot deliver the level of gasoline use and emissions reductions that governments and customers are demanding of automakers. Its vision of environmental friendly is a small electric car principally designed for simple no frills  daily commuting. At the Paris show, Renault unveiled a concept car showing the design of a compact EV commuter car: an EV version of its “   Kangoo   ” utility van, with startling acid-green windows to minimize air conditioning and a lithium-ion battery that carries the van 160 to 200 kilometers on an average charge.

While designing a hybrid car is challenging ( putting 2 different engines than one is expected to be ! ) , a pure electric car isn’t really feasible. For starters , such a vehicle would have very limited range .Further more additional battery power than gas power would mean an increase increased manufacturing of batteries adding to their share of industrial pollution

Nissan ,General Motors, Mitsubishi, are just some of the major automakers trying to get the electric vehicle equation right. Now an Indian based company, Reva Electric Car Company ( RECC ) , has come out with an electric vehicle design that has gained global acceptance. The model, Reva has a fuel economy of 1 cent /kilometer and is capable of traveling  80 km on a single charge , with a top speed of 80kmph. Although only 2,500 models have been sold since 2001, Reva is arguably the world’s largest selling EV.In another demonstration of the feasibility of Reva’s technology, RECC has received $20 million from the Global Environment Fund that invests in business capable of providing cost effective solutions to energy and environmental challenges.Emboldened by this fund grant RECC is now targeting at 30000 cars annually and anticipates bulk of demand from Europe.RECC is also available in 13 countries worldwide and has sold in excess of 1000 units in Britain alone, under the brand G-Wiz.In India too the Delhi government has provided a 29.5% subsidy to promote sale of Reva.

Indian technology is coming of age with the launch of globally competitive products such as the Reva.Recently Tata Motors created quite a ripple in the auto industry with the launch of the Nano, a mere $2500/car ,making it the cheapest car in the world. These events also signal that , considering Indian industry from the mere perspective of cost cutting by means of outsourcing would not augur well for sustainable competitive growth.

With soaring fuel prices more car owners are trading in their gas guzzling SUV’s for smaller, more fuel efficient cars such as the Mercedes made Smart Car and the Toyota Prius

According to CBNnews one in five are seeking smaller cars, compared to one in 8 ten years ago.  SUV sales are down a whopping 30 - 40% over a year ago while sales of the Ford Focus are up 32%, the Toyota Yaris up 46% and Honda Fit sales up an amazing 54% (all of which exceed 30 mpg).  These are more traditional options, but cutting edge transportation options such as the Smart Car and the Vespa are flying off the lot.  You’ve heard about the legendary waiting lists for a Toyota Prius, but you’ll wait 8 months for a Smart Car.  Some dealers are saying that Vespa sales have doubled in the past year.
