StatoilHydro has announced its plans to build and test a fully scale floating wind turbine -  Hywind,. StatoilHydro is planing a power capacity of 2.3 MW on a float that is generally employed by  docking platforms. The estimated costs in this ambitious project are expected to be in the region of $80 million and construction is scheduled to to start by fall 2009.Offshore wind turbines are preferred for power generation primarily due to the availability of regular high speed wind power as opposed to onshore regions. However such installations tend to be prohibitively expensive owing to the high cost of supporting structure. The result of StatoilHydro- Hywind project may pave way for ease in deployment of offshore wind turbines with and also cut down on construction time.
