Microsoft & Samsung Hyping Energy Efficiency Of Windows 7

These days every company is looking for an opportunity to tout their earth saving efforts, no matter how small.  I’m all for incremental power savings because every little bit helps, but some of the companies go over board a bit.  I’m not saying that’s necessarily the case here.  With Microsoft based PC’s still dominating desktops across the world, even small improvements in power consumption can have an impact.

Yesterday, Samsung and Microsoft announced a collaboration aimed at PC energy efficiency.  Samsung expects substantial energy savings when its 40nm DDR3 DRAM memory is used in conjunction with the new Windows 7 operating system.  The company is so thrilled with the new OS that they’ll migrate all corporate PC’s worldwide to Windows 7 beginning next year.

“There is no doubt that the combination of Windows 7 and 40nm DDR3 in new PCs will make users very happy.  If you opt for 4GB of memory in a Windows 7-based system, over typical 2GB-based systems used today, you’ll see an increase in performance, while using less power, thanks to the efficiency of Samsung’s 40nm DDR3 DRAM,” said Dong-Soo Jun, VP of Marketing at Samsung said.
